Corno Grande from Campo Imperatore.

09 CAMPO IMPERATORE

The high point – quite literally – of this trip is the highland plain known as Campo Imperatore (average elevation 1800m). Often referred to as Italy’s ‘Little Tibet’, this magnificent grassy plateau provides spectacular views of Corno Grande (2912m), the highest mountain in the Apennines. You can climb the mountain on the 11.5km via normale (normal route) or just hang around the cable-car station admiring the art-deco Hotel Campo Imperatore (currently being refurbished) from where German paratroopers famously rescued Mussolini in 1943.

From Campo Imperatore, signs direct you down to Fonte Cerreto, a small cluster of hotels set around a funivia (cable car) station, and the nearby A24 autostrada.
